BAI nominates N Sikki Reddy, B Sumeeth Reddy for this year’s Arjuna Awards (May 6)

Badminton Doubles Specialists and life partners N Sikki Reddy and B Sumeeth Reddy have been recommended for Arjuna awards this year by the Badminton Association of India (BAI). The couple, who are regulars in the Indian team, tied the knot in February this year.

India beat New Zealand 4-0 to claim third place in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament held in Malaysia on May 6. India deteriorated their place from last year when it lost 0-4 to Australia in final to finish as runners-up.

Out of these 4 goals, Defender Rupinder Pal Singh scored two penalty corners in the 17th and 27th minute in the second quarter.

Asian Wrestling Championships: India's campaign ends on a high (May 15)

Recently held Asian Wrestling Championships saw India end its successful campaign with a silver medal. Sumit won the medal in Men’s 125kg freestyle bout losing the final against Yadollah Mohammadkazem Mohebi of Iran.

With this silver, India’s medal tally reached a total of 10 medals that include 1 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals.

India beat Italy ahead of U-17 World Cup (May 19)

In a proud moment for India, the U-17 World Cup squad defeated Italy’s U-17 Youth Team 2-0 in Arizo, Italy in a friendly match. With this win, India set the history of defeating Italy for the first time. It may be noted that Italy has won the FIFA World Cup four times.

Strikes that made India’s win possible were made by Abhijit Sarkar (31 minutes) and Rahul Praveen (80 minutes).

MI clinches third IPL trophy third time amidst much fervor (May 22)

The much expected and thrilling grand finale of Indian Premier League 2017 was played between Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant amidst huge crowd and celebrations. Mumbai Indians, led by Captain Rohit Sharma, won the title for record third time out of 10 IPL editions.

In one of the closest finals, MI snatched the victory by one-run in a nail-biting last over from RPS.

Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan knocked out of French Open Qualifiers (May 22))

Yuki Bhambri and Ramkumar Ramanathan were knocked out of French Open qualifiers in their respective opening round games, leaving no Indian behind to compete in the Singles Main of the Grand Slam. Yuki was defeated while fighting up against world number 132 Peter Polansky 6-7(7) 6-7 (5). Ramkumar, however, suffered an easy defeat to world number 114 Guido Pella 2-6 1-6 in a one-sided encounter on court 18.

Pakistan players not allowed in Pro Kabaddi League (May 23)

The government of India stated that Pakistani players will not be allowed to play in India, hence barring them from the Pro Kabaddi League starting from June 25. The league, in its fifth season, recently concluded its largest 2-day auction for players in Delhi. The auction was held between 12 franchises and no Pakistani players were included even in the players' auction of the league.

Team India arrives in London for ICC Champions Trophy (May 25)

Team India, led by skipper Virat Kohli, has arrived in London for ICC Champions Trophy 2017 starting from June 1. India is the defending champion of the trophy and will play its first match on June 4 against arch-rival Pakistan.

Before the tournament starts, India will play two practice matches against New Zealand and Bangladesh on May 28 and 30 respectively.
