Enjoy Celebrating Chandan Yatra in Orissa

Chandan Yatra in OrissaChandan Yatra, alternatively also known as Gandhalepana Yatra is one of the longest festivals of Orissa. Celebrated at Jagannath Temple at Puri, the length of this festival is 42 days.

The date of the origin of his festival tracks back to the Mahabharata era when the Pandavas were in their final year of exile.  King Virata befriend the Pandavas and asked them to help him see Lord Krishna. One of the Pandavas, Yudhishitra asked the king to organize a boat rowing festival.

Hearing about the festival, Lord Krishna along with his brother Balarama and Pandavas arrived at the palace. On their arrival, the king offered them a sandal paste in fragrant water. Lord Krishna and others enjoyed the festival. Thus from that day onwards, Chandan yatra is conducted to commemorate the event.
