It is Jewish biblical 8 days holiday and one of Shalosh R’galim, Three Pilgrimage Festivals of Jewish .festival is filled with two imporatance, one is celebration in Israel’s land for agricultural year and another is to honour God on which Israel’s people depend. This festival is considered as vocational period of rejoicing.
The word “Sukkot” means “booths,” and refers to the temporary dwellings that we are commanded to live in during this holiday in memory of the period of wandering. The Hebrew pronunciation of Sukkot is “Sue COAT,” but is often pronounced as in Yiddish, to rhyme with “BOOK us.”
In the Book, God told Moses to commaned that on Sukkot’s first day people should get hadar tree products and should live for 7 days in booths.
History: history says that Sukkot represents period of 40 years in which Israel children walking on the land with temporary shelter’s life. In agricultural view, Sukkot represent harvest fest.
Temporary shelter known as Sukkah is reconstructed by materials like wood, aluminium etc. and roof is made up of leafy Schacht mats. It is decorated with 4 plant species (lulav, estrog,aravot, hadassim) to thanksgiving to God. This symbolizes the presence of God and its positive waves in all six directions (East, West, North, South, Up, Down). Children enjoy to live and have meal sitting inside it. Jews then celebrate festival in this sukkah.
One can purchase sukkah from online sources or can build their own.
Celebration: on 1st and last day, no work is done. Jewish family just relax, enjoy meals, prays and sleep whole day. In mid days which are known as Chol HaMoed means festival weekdays, is celebrated with Simchat Beit HaShoeivah indicating celebration on water drawing place 7th day is called as Hoshana Rabbah (special day) which means Great Hoshana represents tradition of worship in Synagogue parade by the Jews that is done around the sanctuary’s perimeter and read the Ecclesiastes book in the morning hours. Prayers are done and lulay (palm branch) and estrog (citrus fruit) are kept away from synagogue on Shabbat. 8th day “Day of Solemn Assembly” is called Shemini Atzeret in which is celebrated by leaving Sukkah and eating meals at their house.
