The feast of Holy Cross Day is celebrated on 14th September and is sometimes referred to as a Feast of the Glorious Cross, Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. The day of the celebration marks the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 335. This was a two day festival with the actual consecration of the church on 13th September and the cross itself was brought outside the church on 14th September. This was done with an idea that the clergy and faithful could pray before the True Cross moreover, all could come forward to venerate it.
The Holy Cross Day was one of the 12 great feasts in the Byzantine liturgy and remains a major feast day for the Episcopal Church. When it comes to the collect of the Holy Cross day then, Almighty God, whose son our Saviour Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he might draw the whole world to himself, Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have grace to take up our cross and follow him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.
Nevertheless, the Holy Cross Day is actually a rather ancient observance in the history of the Christian Church, and there were some Lutherans who retained its observance in the centuries following the Reformation.
Well, there are many similarities in the feast of Holy fest and Good Friday in its focus on the Passion of Christ and His death by crucifixion. This festival invites an appropriate and salutary focus on the Cross as the means, by which our Lord Jesus Christ atoned for the sins of the world, defeated death and the devil, reconciled the world to God, obtained our salvation and glorified the Father’s name.
