    In India, each and every fest has its own charm and festivity.   A fest of Holla Mohalla  is the most popular festival of Sikh religion, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm on a large scale in Anandpur Sahib. A day after Holi, this festival of colours and joy is celebrated in the month of March. In the Sikh history, Holla Mohalla forms an important place because it was started by the tenth guru of Sikhs, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.    It signifies that Guru ji had gathered all the Sikhs at one place in order to create a military to perform exercises and mock battles.  Every year the fest of Holla Mohalla is celebrated in Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib, Punjab as per the rituals marking the beginning of New Year.  A unifying factor is provided by this fest to all the Punjabis.


    The celebration starts with a message and encouraging the Sikhs to wake up to their responsibilities and duty as defined by the Army of the Almighty to defend the truth moreover, to protect the society. On this auspicious day, devotees gather in the gurudwaras early morning to be a part of the ceremonious bathing of Guru Granth Sahib Ji with milk and water.  Meanwhile, the religious rituals, recitation of religious phrases and Kirtan are performed.  Sweet and Kasha Parshad are distributed among the people as an offering from God.

    Not only this, as this festival is mainly dedicated the Nihangs who is the most famous and powerful community of Sikhs because they are the true followers of Guru ji.  These armed forces perform bravery acts to display their skills in martial arts in unique as well as traditional style.

    Hola Mohalla fair shows the prowess of a dedicated army initiated by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.  They are dressed in their ceremonial grab and perform astounding feats of combat.  Gatka  is performed by Nihangs while riding horses.  Nihangs with the most impressive attire in deep blue robes with Saffron gridles and high conical turbans decorated with steel rings.


    During the festival of Hola Mohalla, various interesting and joyful attractions are organised along with many sports competitions like Kabaddi, Weight lifting, Cycling, Football, Acrobatics and twisting an Iron rod.  It is not only a festival of religious celebration as well as cultural celebration too.  Many religious music competitions are held.  Irrespective of caste, colour, creed and religion people from all communities visit Anandpur Sahib to participate in the festival whole heartedly.

    Well, on the last day, all devotees participate in the ceremonial procession that starts from Takhat Keshgarh Sahib touring through various gurudwaras of Anandpur Sahib and Lohgarh and ends at the Takhat Shri Keshgarh Sahib. Tourists and visitors around the world visit the land of Anandpur Sahib to enjoy religious and cultural activities of Hola Mohalla.

    This colour splashing festival of Hola Mohalla has been given a title of ‘National Festival’ by the Indian Government.
