    In Sikh community, each and every fest is celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal. When it comes to the birthday of Gurus, then Sikhs organise this event on a large scale. Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated as a birthday of the first Sikh guru and the founder of the Sikh religion.  Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on the full moon day of Kartik, according to the Hindu calendar and his birth date falls in October or November as per the Gregorian calendar. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a great saint, seer and mystic moreover, he was a prolific poet and a unique singer of God’s laudation.

     Celebration:

    Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated in India with gaiety and fervour.  For the people of Sikh religion, it has a lot of religious significance.  In gurudwaras, a three-day prayer, known as an Akhand path is conducted two days before the Gurupurab.  The sacred book of Sikhs, Guru Granth sahib is read, a procession takes place in the morning, popularly known as ‘Prabhat Pheri’ which is led by ‘Panj Pyaras’ (the five beloved persons of Sikh religion who guard the Sikh flag).

    Devotees of all age groups participate in this event and sing religious hymns and tunes enthusiastically in the Prabhat Pheris.  Forming a special part of the procession, local bands play music and make this event more enjoyable.

    Irrespective of the religious faith, free sweets and langar is offered to all.   People with full devotion participate in making ‘Guru Ka Langar’ and make traditional ‘Karah Prasad’.

    The teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji even today give a universal message to the followers all over the world.

    With a message of equality and faith, the procession ends at the Gurudwara, and Parshad is distributed and devotees bend down in the in front of Guru Granth Sahib and seek the blessings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
