Introduction to Andaman and Nicobar

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a place where people go to relax and enjoy the cool breeze while lying down at the beach. While thinking about the islands one can picture the coral reefs, white shores, the palm trees and doing nothing but just relaxing. Apart from the unbelievably beautiful beaches, the islands have a lot to offer. There are activists like Scuba diving, trekking and snorkelling. One can enjoy and relax at the same time.

Island Tourism Festival- 15 days in January

The 15day festival happening in Port Blair starts from 5th January at ITF ground after the inaugural function. The ground is graced with the presence of Hon’ble Lt. Governor. All the main events of the festival take place in Port Blair. But many small events, happen at different places Mayabunder, Diglipur, Hut Bay, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Campbell Bay etc. The festival takes place annually and aims at promoting tourism and entertainment of the islanders.

Festivals of Andaman and Nicobar

There are a variety of festivals that are celebrated here with all that you can imagine. The festivals that are given an immense amount of importance and is something people travel from places to watch and be a part of are Durga Puja, Pongal, Panguni Uthiram, and Onam. Other festivals like Diwali, Janmashtami and Holi etc. are also celebrated.
Most of the festivals are celebrated on the mainland. Because there are a lot of places which have gone under development and many that have been developed. Furthermore, external influence of people also forces them to celebrate the festivals on the mainland.

Andaman and Nicobar Travel, Information

Port Blair is the largest city and is the only place one should go to for doing some sightseeing.  But apart from that, there are 4 places that everyone should visit when they go to Andaman and Nicobar.

  • Bharatpur Beach – You can go and enjoy the white shores and the coral reef. Furthermore, snorkelling is something that one must definitely try, but if you are not into it, you can relax and have a great time at the beach.
  • Cellular Jail - This jail is something that is recommended to the people to visit. As this infamous monument was built to keep prisoners in solitary confinement. Today, the jail stands in the memory of the freedom fighters who lost their lives for the country.
  • Viper Island – The island still has the ruins of the jail that precede the cellular jail. The places are inhabited by various species of snakes and that’s where it gets its name from. The place how infamous it might be during the colonial reign is one of the most famous tourist spots now.
  • The Great Nicobar Island – This is the largest island in the Nicobar island. In 2004, even though being hit by a tsunami you can still see the rainforest and diverse wildlife, flora and aquafauna present there and be mesmerized by the beauty of the quaint beaches.

Food of Andaman and Nicobar

Seafood is the famous cuisine of this area and fresh seafood is being served in almost every restaurant. But if you want to know a particular cuisine of this place, then it has none. Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a place that tribesmen who were hunters and some of whom didn’t even knew about the fire.  But now, due to globalisation and contact with the developed countries, the place has become the habitat to different cuisines and food items.

Arts & Culture in Andaman and Nicobar

Andaman and Nicobar Islands have two different areas. Both the islands have different indigenous tribes living there The Andaman Islands have the Onge, Sentinelese, Jarawa, and Andamanese that are of Negroid descent and the Nicobar Islands have the Shompen and Nicobarese living on the respective islands. The seafood of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is fresh and exquisite and is being exported. There are various crafts that take place, including exotic wood being designed for tourist, mats from palm trees are being made, natural shells collected from the oceans are being sold. Many have feared that they might over exploit the flora and fauna provided by the Island so a trade of a few products has been banned.
