Bollywood is the Indian film industry based in the city of Mumbai (Formerly Bombay). In more formal language, Bollywood is known as Hindi Cinema. It is one of the largest film producers in India with 43% of the net box office revenue being generated by Bollywood movies. Telugu and Tamil cinema represents 36% while rest of the regional cinema constitutes the remaining 21%.
The name Bollywood is derived from Bombay (BO) and Hollywood (LLYWOOD) but Bollywood does not exist at any physical place. The first silent feature film made in India was Raja Harishchandra in 1913 and by 1930s, the industry was producing more than 200 films every year. However, the first sound movie was made in 1931 and it was named as Alam Ara.
The period from 1940s following India’s independence to 1960s is regarded as the Golden Age of Hindi cinema. During this time, some of the most critically acclaimed Hindi films were produced. Bollywood films contain catchy music in the form of song-and-dance numbers woven into the script.
